Bringing the reliability of industrial machinery to wheelchairs—PIJON realizes the “ideal position.”

Implementation Case Study: Welfare and Nursing Care

Miyoshi Kikai’s long-selling pipe joint product, “PIJON,”

has built a reputation for reliability in industrial machinery settings

and is now utilized across a wide range of industries.

Here, we introduce a case study involving the installation of equipment onto an electric wheelchair.

Every electric wheelchair user has a unique physique and sitting posture,

and the posture they find most comfortable can shift throughout the day depending on their physical condition.

Consequently, mounting precision equipment—such as control panels, controllers, or communication aids—

onto the wheelchair presents the following challenges:

Difficulty with fine-tuning: Users need to make constant, precise adjustments to the height and angle to match their line of sight and reach.

Concerns about vibration during movement: The mount must be robust enough to prevent equipment from shifting or sagging under its own weight when encountering bumps or impacts.

Reducing weight: To keep the wheelchair’s total weight down, the mounting components themselves must be as lightweight as possible.

Professional Design Approach: Turning Challenges into Possibilities through Ingenuity

In this instance, we created an arm structure to hold the equipment

primarily by combining “3D brackets” and “round pipes.”

A key design consideration arose here:

The existing frames used by wheelchair manufacturers often lack the precision tolerances found in industrial machinery,

or they may feature non-standard pipe diameters not covered by the standard PIJON lineup.

This presented a hurdle for implementing PIJON, a product defined by its precision specifications.

To overcome this, the customer fabricated a custom bracket to bridge the gap between the existing frame and the PIJON components.

This “bridge” made it possible to adapt PIJON’s versatile adjustment capabilities to the wheelchair.

Why was “PIJON” chosen? Key Advantages

**Flexible 3D Positioning and Easy Adjustment**
The 3D bracket (BC360 series) featured here allows for angle adjustment.

Its ability to tilt and rotate enables precise positioning aligned with the user’s line of sight.

Furthermore, because PIJON systems can be adjusted using just a single hex key,

they ensure optimal usability for both the user and their support staff.

**Exceptional Holding Power Against Vibration, Combined with Lightweight Design**

PIJON utilizes a “slit-clamping structure” that firmly grips the pipe across a wide surface area.

Even when subjected to the continuous vibrations or shocks from bumps encountered by electric wheelchairs,

it maintains the optimal position without rattling—provided the load consists of items like communication devices or control panels.

Additionally, its lightweight aluminum construction minimizes the added weight burden on the wheelchair.

**Safety-Conscious, Rounded Design**

Since the device is used close to the body, it features a rounded design

to minimize the risk of injury should a hand accidentally come into contact with it.

Moreover, its simple, sophisticated anodized finish

blends seamlessly and smartly with the wheelchair without detracting from its original design.

**Ideal for Mounting Electric Wheelchair Control Panels and Augmentative Communication Devices!**
